Poker StrategyBefore using a poker bonus code anywhere, it is important to learn a little poker strategy. Poker strategy is a very broad subject. If you’re just starting out, you will want to make sure you start with the basics. You need to know the values of the hands that are possible, and you need to know exactly in which positions they are playable. This is really basic, but a lot of people skip this because they think that they can “read” their opponents. This too is an important part of the game, but it’s more of an advanced topic and if you try to do it without the proper skills, it can easily backfire on you. Position is just as important as what you have in your hand. If you have a decent hand, but you’re in the first position, it’s probably a good idea to fold. But if there aren’t a lot of people in the hand and you’re in last position with the same decent hand, you stand a much better chance of winning the hand. Why is this? Well, because you are in last position, you have gained a lot more information in regards to what your opponents have. You have seen a big display of weakness so two things are in your favor: your decent hand stands a good chance of being the best hand, and you have the added advantage of positional power. A big bet in last position will entice more people to fold, so you can win hands right away in these instances. This is a very complex topic and a lot has been said in books and articles about how best to use your position, but what it boils down to, is the closer to last position you are, the more info you can get from how the people before you are acting. And the more info you gain, the more accurately you can play your hand. And the more power you gain from your position, the more often you can trick your opponents into incorrect play. For example, if a few people put in the minimum bets after the flop and you’re in last position, you can use a semi-bluff to force a lot of these seemingly weak hands out of the game. You might even be able to win the hand right away. There are many more advanced strategies out there. Pot odds are going to prove to be the most beneficial concept for you. Here, you’re evaluating your chances of winning the hand in comparison to the proportion of money you can win. For instance, if you have contributed $25 into a $100 pot, your effective pot odds are 3-1. This information is important since if you have a 50 percent chance of winning the hand, you’re at an advantage, but if you only have a 10 percent chance of winning, you’ve invested too much money into the hand and you’re at a big disadvantage. So knowing the math behind the hands and knowing how likely you are to win are both important. Let’s say you’re chasing a flush draw after the flop. If you have a four-flush at this stage, you have about a 4-1 chance of hitting your hand. This is really easy to figure out. You know the identity of five of the 52 cards, the two in your hand plus the three on the table. If you have a four-flush in diamonds, there are nine more diamonds out there in the remaining 47 cards. And with two more cards to come, you just need to do the statistics to know your chances. There is a 38-9 chance of hitting on the turn and a 37-9 chance of hitting on the river. Add these together, and simplify them, and you have, more specifically, a 4.1-1 chance of winning. If the flush will definitely win when it hits, then this is your overall win percentage. 4-1 odds is equivalent to winning 20 percent of the time. This information is valuable for evaluating whether or not to pursue the hand. So if someone puts a big bet in and your effective odds are paying less than 4-1, such as with a heads-up, pot-sized bet, even though you have a decent chance of winning, the math behind this says that you need to fold. But if there are five people in the hand and the same bet is thrown in the middle, you’re pot odds are much different and staying in the hand is now worthwhile. Same situation, the only difference is that your pot odds are different. There’s a lot of math in this game, but once you get the hang of it, it will become second nature to you.
