Poker rakeback is a relatively new thing within the online poker community—about ten years old. When you play each hand of poker, a small portion goes toward the house—this is called the rake. When you have a rakeback in place, a little bit of what has been taken from you comes back, either right to your account or as a direct payment to you. Usually this is done through a third party, such as an affiliate. For example, if you sign up to play at a poker room through a friend’s recommendation or another business, the poker site will—under some conditions—pay them a tiny bit of the money that they make off of you. Your affiliate will get this money, and if you signup through the right sources, you might be able to get a small portion returned to you. It won’t be a lot, but hey, it’s more than you would have gotten originally.

The rakeback you earn is calculated based upon a number of different factors. Usually, it is taken from what is deducted from the pots you actively play in as rake, or it is taken from a percentage of your tournament entry fees—this should cover pretty much all type of for-money play that you engage in. So even if you play at small stakes, you’re still going to earn a small amount back eventually.

If you’re interested in getting a rakeback, the first thing you need to check out is whether or not the poker room you play at allows it. Some sites do not allow rakeback programs and will ban you if you are caught using one. Obviously this is something that you will want to avoid. These sites usually will offer some sort of direct customer loyalty program instead. However, if your favorite site does allow it, check with the people that you signed up through to see if they offer a rakeback promotion that you can take part in. This is really easy to do, and once you’re signed up, you will start seeing money coming back to you. Rakebacks will certainly not make you rich, but it’s still extra money, and this is a good thing. Every little bit adds up, and you could easily see yourself saving hundreds of dollars each year if you play a lot of online poker.

If you didn’t sign up through an affiliate, there are private, third party rakeback sites out there. Either way, signing up is really fast and easy. Find the right site to go through, and you can start earning this extra money almost instantly. If you’re interested in a rakeback program and your current poker room doesn’t allow it, you can always switch to a new site. There are a lot of really good, reliable poker rooms out there, and depositing money at a new site has the added bonus of giving you a new sign up bonus that you can add to your account, too.
